SVS for MS Windows 2000/XP
Installation instructions for the SRI Small Vision System, MS Windows
- Install the SVS software
- Install an appropriate frame grabber
- Configure the correct SVS frame grabber interface library
|
Requirements:
MSW 2000, or XP
MSW 98SE is an older OS. It will work, but it is not the best option.
MSW 2000: install latest service packs, through SP4
MSW XP: SP1
Note: The SP2 IEEE 1394 drivers produce image "shifts" every few seconds, at higher frame rates. If you must use SP2, please see the workaround here.
|
1. Install the SVS software
Download the SVS software package from the links shown on the right. You must have a username and password to access the download page.
Special Note: you must have administrator privileges under MSW 2000/XP to install the software correctly.
After downloading the .exe file, double-click on it to start up the installation dialog. Please have your serial number ready, as the SVS stereo processing libraries will not work without it.
NOTE: If you are installing over a previous version of SVS, you must delete the previous installation first. To do this, start the new installation dialog, and when it asks you what action to take, choose "Remove". The old version will be removed, and you can then install the new version.
The default installation directory is C:\Program Files\SRI International\SVS40. You may choose any other directory you wish.
The installation adds smallvcal.exe (SVS) to the Start menu
As of Version 3.1, SVS is using the MSW Installer. If there are any problems, please contact support.

2. Install an IEEE 1394 host card and the Videre Design drivers
To run SVS with the STH-MDCS2, STH-DCSG, or STH-STOC devices, you must install a 1394 OHCI card, or have a working 1394 port on your PC. To install the 1394 card supplied by Videre Design, or your own 1394 card, look at the directions on the right. If you already have a working IEEE 1394 port, then just go to step 3 of the instructions.
|
IEEE 1394 PCI / PCMCIA card (MS Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP only)
- Shut down the computer and install the PCI card, then restart; or, plug in the PCMCIA card.
- The New Hardware Wizard will walk you through the installation. You may need your MSW OS CDROM. If the wizard tells you to reboot, do so.
- Plug in the device to an open IEEE 1394 port (with the PCMCIA card, make sure you have the external power adapter plugged in). Again, the New Hardware Wizard should appear.
- Let the New Hardware Wizard search for the best driver, if it asks. It will also ask if it should continue the installation when the driver is not digitally signed -- answer "Yes".
- Explicit directions for the New Hardware Wizard, as well as information on re-installing the drivers if something goes wrong, can be found here.
- Check the Settings->System->Hardware->Device Manager window, to see that the camera correctly installed. Look under Imaging Devices: there should be a Videre Design Digital Camera Device entry for the STH-MDCS2/DCSG/STOC, and two Videre Design Digital Camera entries for the STH-MDCS2/DCSG-VAR.
- If these entries are not as described, you need to re-install the drivers.
Note to Sony VAIO users:
Sony VAIO computers use a Sony driver for their IEEE 1394 ports, which is incompatible with the Microsoft driver. To switch to the Microsoft driver, follow the directions on the Adobe website for SonySwitcher.

3. Configure the correct SVS frame grabber interface library
The SVS library comes pre-configured for the DCSG, DCSG-STOC, MDCS, and MDCS2 cameras. If you have one of the devices listed on the right, please run the setup script indicated, by double-clicking on it. The script transfers the correct .dll and .lib files to svsgrab.dll and svsgrab.lib. The file assignments are shown on the right.
At this point, you should be able to run the smallv.exe application, and access the stereo head.
